Although possibly best remembered for her siren role in Pickup on South Street (1953), Peters was known for her resistance to be turned into a sex symbol, preferring to play unglamorous, down-to-earth women.

Jean Peters's most notable role to date came in Niagara (1953), where she played Polly Cutler. She also appeared in Pickup on South Street (1953) as Candy. Most recently appeared in Viva Zapata! (1952) as Josefa.
