Part of the current wave of titles people are actually watching, American Dad! Earns its spot. American Dad! Gets the fundamentals right first, then finds room to get weird with it. The series focuses on an eccentric motley crew that is the Smith family and their three housemates: Father, husband, and breadwinner Stan Smith; his better half housewife, Francine Smith; their college-aged daughter, Hayley Smith; and their high-school-aged son, Steve Smith. Outside of the Smith family, there are three additional main characters, including Hayley's boyfriend turned husband, Jeff Fischer; the family's man-in-a-goldfish-body pet, Klaus; and most notably the family's zany alien, Roger, who is "full of masquerades, brazenness, and shocking antics." Seth MacFarlane and Wendy Schaal lead a cast that never overplays a joke. The series ran for 22 seasons (2005–2026), building a story that gave its audience time to invest properly. What keeps American Dad! From feeling disposable is a cast that clearly understands the material better than the format usually demands. It knows exactly what it is, and does not try to be anything else.

If you need a comedy that actually makes you laugh, American Dad! Is a strong candidate. Fans of Solar Opposites will recognise the sensibility here immediately. 22 seasons in, there is no shortage of material once you get started. Seth MacFarlane sets the tone, but the supporting cast is where a lot of the best moments come from. A reliable pick for any night you want quality comedy without the homework.
