Britannia arrived without much fanfare and built its audience the hard way — through word of mouth. Britannia treats its concept seriously enough to follow it all the way through. An epic drama set in 43AD as the Roman Imperial Army – determined and terrified in equal measure - returns to crush the Celtic heart of Britannia - a mysterious land ruled by warrior women and powerful druids who can channel the powerful forces of the underworld. Or so they say. Kelly Reilly and David Morrissey lead a cast that never lets the concept overwhelm the characters. Across 3 seasons (2018–2021), it never lost the thread that made it worth starting. Britannia resists the temptation to explain everything, trusting the audience to sit with ambiguity. It knows exactly what it is, and does not try to be anything else.

For late-night viewing or a proper weekend binge, Britannia fits the bill. Motherland: Fort Salem is the obvious comparison, but Britannia earns its own place alongside it.
