Digimon Data Squad has built a real following in Australia on Crunchyroll Amazon Channel, and in the US on Crunchyroll Amazon Channel among viewers who want their sci-fi to think as hard as it looks. The 1-season run is exactly the right length for what it is doing. An 8/10 rating says what the writing already makes obvious: this one works. Soichiro Hoshi anchors it with a performance that grounds the bigger ideas in something human. There is no real reason to keep putting it off — it is right there on Crunchyroll Amazon Channel.
There is a reason Digimon Data Squad keeps coming up in conversation. Digimon Data Squad uses its genre premise as cover for asking bigger questions. Masaru, is a second year Junior High student, and is undefeated in battle, He meets the Digital Monster Agumon, who has escaped from DATS, a secret government organization. Despite terrible first impressions, the two become best friends by talking with their "fists". With others, Masaru and Agumon work to investigate various incidents involving the Digital World and Digital Monsters, to try and get to the bottom of things. Soichiro Hoshi and Taiki Matsuno lead a cast that never lets the concept overwhelm the characters. It was aired in 2006–2007. The world-building is meticulous enough to sustain multiple rewatches, with details early on that only make sense later. It rarely drops the ball, and when it does, it recovers fast.
For late-night viewing or a proper weekend binge, Digimon Data Squad fits the bill. Viewers who responded to Digimon: Digital Monsters will find a lot to like here too. It is a manageable watch, easy to fit into a single week. Watch for Soichiro Hoshi in particular — the performance elevates the material. Satisfying on multiple levels.
