If you want science fiction that respects its own premise, Dollhouse is available in Australia on Disney Plus right now. 2 seasons in, and the quality has not slipped. 499 viewers have already rated it on TMDB — the kind of consensus that does not happen by accident. Eliza Dushku anchors it with a performance that grounds the bigger ideas in something human. Put it on tonight on Disney Plus and see for yourself.
Dollhouse arrived without much fanfare and built its audience the hard way — through word of mouth. The world-building is meticulous, but it is the characters who carry Dollhouse through its more ambitious moments. Echo is a member of a highly illegal and underground group of individuals whose personalities have been wiped clean so they can be imprinted with any number of new personas. Confined between missions to a secret facility known as the Dollhouse, the "Actives" are hired by the wealthy, powerful and connected to wholly become—with mind, personality and physiology—whomever the client wants or needs them to be. They know no other life than the specific engagements they are in at that time—or do they? Eliza Dushku and Fran Kranz lead a cast that makes the ambitious moments land. Across 2 seasons (2009–2010), it never lost the thread that made it worth starting. The rules of Dollhouse's world are consistent enough that the big swings never feel like cheating. It knows exactly what it is, and does not try to be anything else.
Viewers burned by ambitious sci-fi that could not sustain its premise should give Dollhouse a chance. If you have already watched Marvel's Runaways, Dollhouse is a natural next step. It is a manageable watch, easy to fit into a single week. Eliza Dushku anchors it with a performance that makes the more abstract moments feel personal. If you have been burned by ambitious sci-fi before, this is the exception.
Dollhouse was cancelled in 2010, created by Joss Whedon — and 2 seasons are available to watch from start to finish.
