Andy Millman gave up his day job five years ago in the hope of achieving the big time, but he’s yet to land a speaking part, let alone saunter down the red carpet to pick up an Oscar. He remains optimistic however, as rubbing shoulders with the A-list on-set only serves to reinforce his belief that the big time is just a job or two away. Ricky Gervais and Ashley Jensen lead a cast with the timing to make it work. It ran for 2 seasons (2005–2006), and the writing holds up across every one of them. What keeps Extras from feeling disposable is a cast that clearly understands the material better than the format usually demands. It rarely drops the ball, and when it does, it recovers fast.

Extras is the kind of thing you put on in the background and end up fully watching. Party Down is the obvious comparison, but Extras earns its own place alongside it. Short enough to finish in a weekend, substantial enough to feel satisfying. Ricky Gervais anchors an ensemble with real chemistry. Genuinely funny, consistently, across the whole run.
