Freezing is currently streaming in Australia on Crunchyroll, and in the US on Crunchyroll, and it earns its premise rather than just borrowing genre trappings. Across 2 seasons, the show has had time to find its rhythm and keep it. With 79 viewer ratings on TMDB, this is not a title flying under the radar. Watch it for Ami Koshimizu — the performance elevates material that could easily tip into self-seriousness. Available now on Crunchyroll — press play and find out why people keep recommending it.
Whatever else is competing for your attention this week, Freezing is worth clearing space for. What makes Freezing work is that the ideas never crowd out the people having them. Eager to follow in the footsteps of his fallen sister, Kazuya enrolls at West Genetics Academy, a training facility for buxom heroes known as Pandoras. These courageous schoolgirls are genetically-enhanced with enough sex appeal to cripple a man – and the superhuman strength to slaughter aliens by the dozen. Kazuya’s role is that of Limiter, a Pandora’s battle partner, and he quickly sets his sights on the most feared beauty in school, Satellizer el Bridget. Ami Koshimizu and Aya Uchida lead a cast that keeps the bigger ideas grounded in something human. It ran for 2 seasons (2011–2013), and the writing holds up across every one of them. The rules of Freezing's world are consistent enough that the big swings never feel like cheating. It knows exactly what it is, and does not try to be anything else.
For late-night viewing or a proper weekend binge, Freezing fits the bill. Fans of Harem in the Labyrinth of Another World will recognise the sensibility here immediately. Best experienced as a single, sustained watch if your schedule allows. Ami Koshimizu's performance is the anchor the more ambitious moments need. The world-building pays off in ways you will not anticipate on a first watch.
