Gokusen is currently streaming in Australia on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, and in the US on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, and it delivers exactly the kind of comedy that earns a loyal following. 3 seasons in, and the quality has not slipped. With 51 viewer ratings on TMDB, this is not a title flying under the radar. Yukie Nakama leads a cast with real comic timing. Put it on tonight on Netflix and see for yourself.
Gokusen arrived without much fanfare and built its audience the hard way — through word of mouth. The jokes in Gokusen land because the characters underneath them are worth caring about. Newly graduate Yamaguchi Kumiko an idealistic teacher who entered Shirokin High to be a math teacher. Having high hopes for her students, her world turned up side down when she finds out that she'll be teaching the class 3-D the hardest class to take care of. Class 3-D is a bunch of students who looks more like delinquents and trouble makers. Yukie Nakama and Katsuhisa Namase lead a cast that never overplays a joke. The series ran for 3 seasons (2002–2008), building a story that gave its audience time to invest properly. Gokusen earns its laughs from character rather than situation, which is why it does not wear thin the way pure farce tends to. The consistency throughout is what elevates it — not every moment is the best, but none of them are a reason to stop watching.
Gokusen is the kind of thing you put on in the background and end up fully watching. The tonal similarities to How I Met Your Father are real, though Gokusen carves out its own identity quickly. It is a manageable watch, easy to fit into a single week. Yukie Nakama sets the tone, but the supporting cast is where a lot of the best moments come from. A reliable pick for any night you want quality comedy without the homework.
