If you want science fiction that respects its own premise, Gunbuster is available on streaming right now. Across 2 seasons, the show has had time to find its rhythm and keep it. These aliens seem dedicated to the eradication of mankind as they near closer and closer to discovering Earth. In response, humanity develops giant fighting robots piloted by hand-picked youth from around the world. Maaya Sakamoto and Mitsuo Iwata lead a cast that makes the ambitious moments land. 2 seasons (1988–2006) gave the story room most shows never get. The world-building is meticulous enough to sustain multiple rewatches, with details early on that only make sense later. The consistency throughout is what elevates it — not every moment is the best, but none of them are a reason to stop watching.

For late-night viewing or a proper weekend binge, Gunbuster fits the bill. Macross Plus is the obvious comparison, but Gunbuster earns its own place alongside it. It is a manageable watch, easy to fit into a single week. Maaya Sakamoto grounds the bigger ideas in something human. Once you are in, you will want to talk about it.
