Helix is currently streaming in the US on Hulu, and it earns its premise rather than just borrowing genre trappings. 2 seasons in, and the quality has not slipped. A 7/10 rating says what the writing already makes obvious: this one works. Billy Campbell leads a cast that never lets the concept overwhelm the characters. Start it on Hulu whenever you need something guaranteed to land.
Whatever else is competing for your attention this week, Helix is worth clearing space for. The world-building is meticulous, but it is the characters who carry Helix through its more ambitious moments. Helix is an intense thriller about a team of scientists from the Centers for Disease Control who travel to a high-tech research facility in the Arctic to investigate a possible disease outbreak, only to find themselves pulled into a terrifying life-and-death struggle that holds the key to mankind's salvation...or total annihilation. The human element stays intact thanks to Billy Campbell and Meegwun Fairbrother, who anchor every scene. It ran for 2 seasons (2014–2015), and the writing holds up across every one of them. Helix resists the temptation to explain everything, trusting the audience to sit with ambiguity. There is real craft here, even in the moments that do not fully land.
Sci-fi fans who want ideas alongside the spectacle will find Helix genuinely rewarding. ReGenesis is the obvious comparison, but Helix earns its own place alongside it. The complete run is available and best experienced without too much prior knowledge of where it goes. Billy Campbell grounds the bigger ideas in something human. Once you are in, you will want to talk about it.
Helix was cancelled in 2015, created by Ronald D. Moore and Cameron Porsandeh — and 2 seasons are available to watch from start to finish.
