If you want science fiction that respects its own premise, InuYasha is available in the US on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video right now. 2 seasons means there is plenty to get through without ever feeling padded. With 2,091 viewer ratings on TMDB, this is not a title flying under the radar. Kappei Yamaguchi sets the tone, and the world-building does the rest. Start it on Netflix whenever you need something guaranteed to land.
InuYasha is not trying to be everything to everyone, and that focus is exactly what makes it work. The world-building is meticulous, but it is the characters who carry InuYasha through its more ambitious moments. Kagome Higurashi is a modern day young girl who lives with her family by the old Higure shrine. Unbeknownst to Kagome, she is the reincarnation of priestess Kikyo and posseses the "Jewel of Four Souls" (the Shikon jewel). One ill-fated day, Kagome locates an ancient well near her home and is abruptly transported through the well and into a feudal Japan, inhabited by demons. Kappei Yamaguchi and Satsuki Yukino lead a cast that never lets the concept overwhelm the characters. 2 seasons (2000–2010) gave the story room most shows never get. InuYasha resists the temptation to explain everything, trusting the audience to sit with ambiguity. It sustains a level of quality that very few manage to hold onto all the way through.
For late-night viewing or a proper weekend binge, InuYasha fits the bill. The tonal similarities to Blast of Tempest are real, though InuYasha carves out its own identity quickly. Best experienced as a single, sustained watch if your schedule allows. Kappei Yamaguchi anchors it with a performance that makes the more abstract moments feel personal. If you have been burned by ambitious sci-fi before, this is the exception.
