Whatever else is competing for your attention this week, Invader ZIM is worth clearing space for. The jokes in Invader ZIM land because the characters underneath them are worth caring about. Zim dreams of greatness. Unfortunately, though, he's hopelessly inept as a space invader. Desperate to be rid of the annoying Zim, his planet's leaders send him on a mission to infiltrate Earth, providing him with leftover, cobbled-together equipment. Richard Steven Horvitz and Andy Berman lead a cast that never overplays a joke. The series ran for 2 seasons (2001–2006), building a story that gave its audience time to invest properly. The timing in Invader ZIM is precise enough that even the throwaway lines land on a second watch. Every minute repays the time invested, and the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
