Whatever else is competing for your attention this week, Justified is worth clearing space for. At its heart, Justified understands what makes crime drama work — character first, plot second. A character drama based on the 2001 Elmore Leonard short story "Fire in the Hole." Leonard's tale centers around U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens of Kentucky, a quiet but strong-willed official of the law. The tale covers his high-stakes job, as well as his strained relationships with his ex-wife and father. Timothy Olyphant and Walton Goggins lead a cast that gives the tension real weight. 6 seasons (2010–2015) gave the story room most shows never get. What distinguishes the best crime dramas from the rest is whether the character work can carry scenes where the mystery takes a breath — Justified passes that test consistently. The consistency throughout is what elevates it — not every moment is the best, but none of them are a reason to stop watching.

If you cannot walk away from a good mystery, Justified will keep you hooked. The tonal similarities to Justified: City Primeval are real, though Justified carves out its own identity quickly. 6 seasons in, there is no shortage of material once you get started.
