Land of the Giants has built a real following among viewers who want their sci-fi to think as hard as it looks. 2 seasons in, and the quality has not slipped. 49 viewers have already rated it on TMDB — the kind of consensus that does not happen by accident. Don Marshall sets the tone, and the world-building does the rest. There is no real reason to keep putting it off.
Part of the current wave of titles people are actually watching, Land of the Giants earns its spot. Land of the Giants treats its concept seriously enough to follow it all the way through. Set fifteen years in the then-future year 1983, the series tells the tale of the crew and passengers of a sub-orbital transport ship named Spindrift. In the pilot episode, the Spindrift is en route from Los Angeles to London, on an ultra-fast sub-orbital flight. Just beyond Earth's boundary with space, the Spindrift encounters a magnetic space storm, and is dragged through a space warp to a mysterious planet where everything is twelve times larger than on Earth, whose inhabitants the Earthlings nickname "the Giants". Don Marshall and Heather Young lead a cast that keeps the bigger ideas grounded in something human. It ran for 2 seasons (1968–1970), and the writing holds up across every one of them. The world-building is meticulous enough to sustain multiple rewatches, with details early on that only make sense later. It knows exactly what it is, and does not try to be anything else.
Land of the Giants is satisfying on multiple levels — something to watch and something to think about after. Fans of The Bionic Woman will recognise the sensibility here immediately. The complete run is available and best experienced without too much prior knowledge of where it goes. Don Marshall grounds the bigger ideas in something human. Once you are in, you will want to talk about it.
