But when the teens open a portal from the game into the real world, they must `level up' by protecting their real-life town from game villain Maldark and other game characters, all while attending school during the day and trying to lead normal lives (or at least as normal as a teenager's life can be). Gaelan Connell and Jessie T. Usher lead a cast that never overplays a joke. 2 seasons (2012–2013) gave the story room most shows never get. What keeps Level Up from feeling disposable is a cast that clearly understands the material better than the format usually demands. It delivers reliably on what it promises, which is more than most of its competition manages.
