Perception is currently streaming in Australia on Disney Plus, and in the UK on Disney Plus, and its case-by-case structure never gets in the way of the bigger story. The 3-season run is exactly the right length for what it is doing. A 7/10 rating says what the writing already makes obvious: this one works. Eric McCormack leads a cast that carries the story without ever feeling mechanical. There is no real reason to keep putting it off — it is right there on Disney Plus.
Part of the current wave of titles people are actually watching, Perception earns its spot. The plotting in Perception is tight enough that the twists feel earned rather than assembled. Dr. Daniel Pierce, a neuroscientist and professor, is recruited to help the federal government crack difficult cases. His intimate knowledge of human behavior and masterful understanding of the mind give him an extraordinary ability to read people, but his eccentric view of the world and less-than-stellar social skills can often interfere with his work. Eric McCormack and Rachael Leigh Cook lead a cast that gives the tension real weight. It ran for 3 seasons (2012–2015), and the writing holds up across every one of them. Perception is at its best in the quiet scenes between the plot beats, where the character work actually happens. It delivers reliably on what it promises, which is more than most of its competition manages.
Viewers who think they have seen every crime drama tend to find Perception proves them wrong. Viewers who responded to Numb3rs will find a lot to like here too. Short enough to finish in a weekend, substantial enough to feel satisfying. Watch Eric McCormack work — it is a masterclass in the genre. Few crime dramas earn their twists this consistently.
Perception was cancelled in 2015, created by Kenneth Biller and Michael Sussman — and 3 seasons are available to watch from start to finish.
