Right now you can watch Sanctuary in the US on Peacock Premium and MovieSphere+ Amazon Channel, and in the UK on Amazon Prime Video — and it goes further with its ideas than most genre entertainment bothers to. Every one of its 4 seasons holds up. 301 people have weighed in on TMDB, and the verdict leans heavily positive. Watch it for Amanda Tapping — the performance elevates material that could easily tip into self-seriousness. There is no real reason to keep putting it off — it is right there on Peacock Premium.
Whatever else is competing for your attention this week, Sanctuary is worth clearing space for. The world-building is meticulous, but it is the characters who carry Sanctuary through its more ambitious moments. The adventures of the beautiful, enigmatic and always surprising Dr. Helen Magnus, a brilliant scientist who holds the secrets of a clandestine population called Abnormals—a group of strange and sometimes terrifying beings that hide among humans. Magnus seeks to protect this threatened phenomena as well as unlock the mysteries behind their existence. Amanda Tapping and Robin Dunne lead a cast that makes the ambitious moments land. Across 4 seasons (2008–2011), it never lost the thread that made it worth starting. Sanctuary resists the temptation to explain everything, trusting the audience to sit with ambiguity. It knows exactly what it is, and does not try to be anything else.
Sanctuary is satisfying on multiple levels — something to watch and something to think about after. The tonal similarities to Heroes are real, though Sanctuary carves out its own identity quickly. Best experienced as a single, sustained watch if your schedule allows. Watch for Amanda Tapping in particular — the performance elevates the material. Satisfying on multiple levels.
