Shark is currently streaming on major platforms, and its case-by-case structure never gets in the way of the bigger story. Across 2 seasons, the show has had time to find its rhythm and keep it. A 7/10 rating says what the writing already makes obvious: this one works. James Woods anchors it, but the writing does the real work. Part of the current wave of titles people are actually watching, Shark earns its spot. At its heart, Shark understands what makes crime drama work — character first, plot second. Notorious Los Angeles defense attorney Sebastian Stark becomes disillusioned with his career after his successful defense of a wife-abuser results in the wife's death. After more than a month trying to come to grips with his situation, he is invited by the Los Angeles district attorney to become a public prosecutor so he can apply his unorthodox-but-effective talents to putting guilty people away instead of putting them back on the street. Credit to James Woods and Jeri Ryan for grounding it — this is a cast that earns the twists. 2 seasons (2006–2008) gave the story room most shows never get. What distinguishes the best crime dramas from the rest is whether the character work can carry scenes where the mystery takes a breath — Shark passes that test consistently. It delivers reliably on what it promises, which is more than most of its competition manages.
If you cannot walk away from a good mystery, Shark will keep you hooked. Fans of Perry Mason will recognise the sensibility here immediately. A contained run means every episode is doing real work. James Woods carries scenes that would sink a lesser production. The resolution feels inevitable rather than arbitrary, which is rarer than it sounds.
