The Guardian is currently streaming in Australia on Sony Pictures Core Amazon Channel, and in the US on Paramount Plus Premium, and it rewards the patience it asks of you. 3 seasons in, and the quality has not slipped. 58 viewers have already rated it on TMDB — the kind of consensus that does not happen by accident. Watch it for Simon Baker — one of the stronger performances out there right now. There is no real reason to keep putting it off — it is right there on Sony Pictures Core Amazon Channel.
The Guardian is not trying to be everything to everyone, and that focus is exactly what makes it work. Character-driven storytelling at its most effective — The Guardian earns every emotional beat it goes for. Nick Fallin is a hotshot lawyer working at his father's ultrasuccessful Pittsburgh law firm. Unfortunately, the high life has gotten the best of Nick. Arrested for drug use, he's sentenced to do 1,500 hours of community service, somehow to be squeezed into his 24/7 cutthroat world of mergers, acquisitions and board meetings. The performances from Simon Baker and Dabney Coleman give it more weight than the premise alone would suggest. Across 3 seasons (2001–2004), it never lost the thread that made it worth starting. The Guardian resists tidy resolutions in a way that respects how messy real consequences actually are. It knows exactly what it is, and does not try to be anything else.
Viewers drawn to character-driven storytelling will find plenty to sit with in The Guardian. If you have already watched S.W.A.T., The Guardian is a natural next step. Short enough to finish in a weekend, substantial enough to feel satisfying. Simon Baker carries the material with a performance that rewards close attention. Worth starting sooner rather than later.
The Guardian wrapped up in 2004, created by David Hollander — and 3 seasons are available to watch from start to finish.
