The Legend of Tarzan has built a real following on TVNZ+ among viewers who do not usually seek out animation. 2 seasons means there is plenty to get through without ever feeling padded. A 7/10 rating says what the writing already makes obvious: this one works. Michael T. Weiss brings more to the role than the format usually demands. There is no real reason to keep putting it off — it is right there on TVNZ+.
Whatever else is competing for your attention this week, The Legend of Tarzan is worth clearing space for. Visually distinctive and narratively ambitious, The Legend of Tarzan operates well above the genre average. The Legend of Tarzan picks up where the 1999 feature film left off, with the title character adjusting to his new role as leader of the apes following Kerchak's death, and Jane adjusting to life in the jungle. Rounding out the cast are Jane's father, Professor Archimedes Porter; Tantor, the germophobic elephant; and Terk, a wisecracking female gorilla and Tarzan's old wrestling buddy. The voice work from Michael T. Weiss and Olivia D'Abo adds real texture, not just recognisable names. 2 seasons (2001–2003) gave the story room most shows never get. What makes The Legend of Tarzan more than a curiosity is writing that would hold up in any format. There is real craft here, even in the moments that do not fully land.
The Legend of Tarzan belongs on any best-of list regardless of format. If you have already watched The Lion Guard, The Legend of Tarzan is a natural next step. It is a manageable watch, easy to fit into a single week. Michael T. Weiss brings more to the role than the format usually demands. A harder one to justify skipping than to start.
