Trick has quietly become one of the more dependable comedies currently available. Across 3 seasons, the show has had time to find its rhythm and keep it. 25 viewers have already rated it on TMDB — the kind of consensus that does not happen by accident. Yukie Nakama sets the tone, and the rest of the cast matches it scene for scene. There is no real reason to keep putting it off.
Trick is not trying to be everything to everyone, and that focus is exactly what makes it work. The jokes in Trick land because the characters underneath them are worth caring about. Although 23 year old Yamada Naoko is a "super" magician, she is continously fired and constantly hounded by her landlady for the rent being late. After being fired once again, her boss shows her an ad of a physics professor, a non-believer of all things magical, offering money to anyone who can prove to him that magic is real. Desperately needing the money, Naoko accepts the challenge, which is how she comes to meet Professor Ueda. Between them, Yukie Nakama and Hiroshi Abe carry the comedy without ever forcing it. It ran for 3 seasons (2000–2003), and the writing holds up across every one of them. The timing in Trick is precise enough that even the throwaway lines land on a second watch. It knows exactly what it is, and does not try to be anything else.
Trick is the kind of thing you put on in the background and end up fully watching. Wilfred is the obvious comparison, but Trick earns its own place alongside it. A contained run means every episode is doing real work. Yukie Nakama sets the tone, but the supporting cast is where a lot of the best moments come from. A reliable pick for any night you want quality comedy without the homework.
