The world-building is meticulous, but it is the characters who carry Under the Dome through its more ambitious moments. A small town is suddenly and inexplicably sealed off from the rest of the world by an enormous transparent dome. While military forces, the government and the media positioned outside of this surrounding barrier attempt to break it down, a small group of people inside attempt to figure out what the dome is, where it came from, and when (and if) it will go away. Mike Vogel and Rachelle Lefevre lead a cast that never lets the concept overwhelm the characters. 3 seasons (2013–2015) gave the story room most shows never get. Under the Dome resists the temptation to explain everything, trusting the audience to sit with ambiguity. It knows exactly what it is, and does not try to be anything else.
