Right now you can watch Wildfire in Australia on Stan and Lionsgate+ Amazon Channels, and in the US on Wonder Project Amazon Channel and Spectrum On Demand — and the writing holds up regardless of the format's reputation. 4 seasons in, and the quality has not slipped. An 8/10 rating says what the writing already makes obvious: this one works. Genevieve Padalecki brings more to the role than the format usually demands. Put it on tonight on Stan and see for yourself.
Wildfire is not trying to be everything to everyone, and that focus is exactly what makes it work. Visually distinctive and narratively ambitious, Wildfire operates well above the genre average. After serving time at a juvenile detention center, eighteen-year-old Kris Furillo is given the opportunity to start a new life. Her talent with horses is recognized by a volunteer and local trainer, who arranges a job for her at the Ritter's family run ranch. Every line from Genevieve Padalecki and Micah Alberti lands with more craft than you'd expect. It ran for 4 seasons (2005–2008), and the writing holds up across every one of them. Wildfire uses the freedom of animation to tell stories live-action could not attempt. The consistency throughout is what elevates it — not every moment is the best, but none of them are a reason to stop watching.
If you have been sleeping on Wildfire because of the format, the format is not the issue here. Fans of McLeod's Daughters will recognise the sensibility here immediately. Best experienced as a single, sustained watch if your schedule allows. The writing operates at a level the format's reputation does not fully prepare you for. Adult animation that actually works for adults.
