Will & Grace has quietly become one of the more dependable comedies currently available in Australia on Amazon Prime Video and Stan, and in the US on Hulu. 8 seasons of it means there is plenty to get through without ever feeling padded. A 7/10 rating says what the writing already makes obvious: this one works. Eric McCormack is the obvious draw, but the whole ensemble earns its laughs. Start it on Amazon Prime Video whenever you need something guaranteed to land.
Whatever else is competing for your attention this week, Will & Grace is worth clearing space for. Will & Grace does what great comedies rarely manage — it is actually funny, consistently, across the whole run. Will Truman and Grace Adler are best friends living in New York, and when Grace's engagement falls apart, she moves in with Will. Together, along with their friends, they go through the trials of dating, sex, relationships and their careers, butting heads at times but ultimately supporting one another while exchanging plenty of witty banter along the way. The chemistry Eric McCormack and Debra Messing bring to it does a lot of the heavy lifting. It ran for 8 seasons (1998–2006), and the writing holds up across every one of them. The timing in Will & Grace is precise enough that even the throwaway lines land on a second watch. There is real craft here, even in the moments that do not fully land.
Will & Grace is the kind of thing you put on in the background and end up fully watching. The tonal similarities to Friends are real, though Will & Grace carves out its own identity quickly. 8 seasons in, there is no shortage of material once you get started. Eric McCormack is funny in a way that holds up on rewatch. Put it on when you need something guaranteed to land.
