A classic from before the prestige-TV era, Bubblegum Crisis follows a path that stands out in a crowded field. MegaTokyo 2033: Tokyo was left flattened as a result from a great earthquake. A new city, MegaTokyo, was then recreated due in no small part from the aid of a multi-million dollar company, Genom Corp. Genom created and mass-produced biomechanical creatures called Boomers to aid in the restoration of MegaTokyo. Kinuko Oomori and Akiko Hiramatsu lead a cast that brings real weight to the material. It aired in 1987–1991.
Sci-fi fans who want ideas alongside the spectacle will find Bubblegum Crisis genuinely rewarding — it shares something with The Adventures of the Little Prince but carves out its own territory entirely. The kind of genre television that makes you think as well as watch.
