Gintama has built a reputation that precedes it, and right now it's all available in Australia on Crunchyroll and Crunchyroll Amazon Channel, and in the US on Netflix and Hulu. Tomokazu Sugita leads a cast that brings something genuine to every episode.
The world-building is meticulous, but it's the characters who carry Gintama through the more ambitious episodes. In a world where aliens have invaded Edo Period Japan, skyscrapers, trains and motor bikes have replaced the simple life of Earth inhabitants. One man however, still carries the soul of a samurai, Gintoki Sakata, otherwise known as Yorozuya Gin-san. As reckless as he is, Gintoki carries his own resolve and is ready to take on any challenge with his fellow companions. Tomokazu Sugita and Rie Kugimiya lead a cast that brings real weight to the material. The series ran for 11 seasons (2006β2018), building a story that gave its audience time to invest properly.
Sci-fi fans who want ideas alongside the spectacle will find Gintama genuinely rewarding β it shares something with The Adventures of the Little Prince but carves out its own territory entirely. The kind of genre television that makes you think as well as watch.
