Right now, Kakegurui is on Netflix and several other platforms, sitting at 8/10 on TMDB. Consistently well-regarded, and easy to understand why once you start watching.
At its heart, Kakegurui is a procedural that understands what makes the genre work — character first, plot second. Run by a corrupt and sadistic school council, the “system” at Hyakkaou is based on gambling, with losers who cannot cover their debts being demeaned by their peers and forced to serve their debtholders. And if that’s not terrifying enough, some games can result in losing an eye, one’s fingernails, or even their life! But the system is shocked when transfer student Yumeko Jabami arrives. Tatsuya Tokutake and Saori Hayami lead a cast that brings real weight to the material. The series ran for 2 seasons (2017–2019), building a story that gave its audience time to invest properly.
Perfect for viewers who think they've already seen all the great crime dramas. Kakegurui is the one that tends to prove them wrong.
