Thir13en Ghosts arrived without much fanfare and built its audience the hard way β through word of mouth. Character-driven storytelling at its most effective β Thir13en Ghosts earns every emotional beat it goes for. Arthur and his two children inherit his uncle's estate: a glass house that serves as a prison to twelve ghosts. When the family, accompanied by a nanny and an attorney, enter the house they find themselves trapped inside an evil machine 'designed by the Devil and powered by the dead' to open the Eye of Hell. Aided by a ghost hunter and his rival, a ghost rights activist out to set the ghosts free, the group must do what they can to get out of the house alive. Tony Shalhoub and Embeth Davidtz lead a cast doing genuinely serious work here. It was released in 2001. Thir13en Ghosts resists tidy resolutions in a way that respects how messy real consequences actually are. It knows exactly what it is, and does not try to be anything else.
Viewers drawn to character-driven storytelling will find plenty to sit with in Thir13en Ghosts. It rewards viewers regardless of what else is in their watch history. Short enough to finish in one sitting, substantial enough to feel satisfying. Tony Shalhoub carries the material with a performance that rewards close attention. Worth starting sooner rather than later.
