Valkyrie is currently streaming in Australia on Stan and FilmBox+, and in the US on fuboTV and MGM+ Amazon Channel, and it rewards the patience it asks of you. A tight runtime that never overstays its welcome. 4,160 viewers have already rated it on TMDB — the kind of consensus that does not happen by accident. Tom Cruise sets the tone, and the rest of the cast matches it scene for scene. Start it on Stan whenever you need something guaranteed to land.
Whatever else is competing for your attention this week, Valkyrie is worth clearing space for. Valkyrie takes its time building the world its characters inhabit, and the patience pays off. Wounded in Africa during World War II, Nazi Col. Claus von Stauffenberg returns to his native Germany and joins the Resistance in a daring plan to create a shadow government and assassinate Adolf Hitler. When events unfold so that he becomes a central player, he finds himself tasked with both leading the coup and personally killing the Führer. Tom Cruise and Kenneth Branagh lead a cast doing genuinely serious work here. It was released in 2008. The writing trusts the audience to sit with ambiguity rather than wrapping everything up in a tidy conclusion — it is the approach that separates good drama from great. It knows exactly what it is, and does not try to be anything else.
Viewers drawn to character-driven storytelling will find plenty to sit with in Valkyrie. It does not lean on comparisons to make its case. A contained runtime means every scene is doing real work. Tom Cruise is the centre of it, and it is one of their strongest performances on record. The patience it asks of you early on is paid back with interest.
