American Underdog has the visual identity that makes it immediately recognisable, and the writing to back it up. The true story of Kurt Warner, who went from a stockboy at a grocery store to a two-time NFL MVP, Super Bowl champion, and Hall of Fame quarterback. Zachary Levi and Anna Paquin lead a cast that brings real weight to the material. It was released in 2021. American Underdog uses the freedom of animation to tell stories live-action could not attempt. It delivers reliably on what it promises, which is more than most of its competition manages.

American Underdog belongs on any best-of list regardless of format. It does not lean on comparisons to make its case. Short enough to finish in one sitting, substantial enough to feel satisfying. The writing operates at a level the format's reputation does not fully prepare you for. Adult animation that actually works for adults.
