Cavegirl is currently streaming in Australia on Cultpix, and in the US on Cultpix, and it delivers exactly the kind of comedy that earns a loyal following. It says what it needs to say in one sitting, no filler. Its 4/10 TMDB score, built from 23 ratings, reflects a title that consistently delivers. Daniel Roebuck is the obvious draw, but the whole ensemble earns its laughs. Put it on tonight on Cultpix and see for yourself.
Whatever else is competing for your attention this week, Cavegirl is worth clearing space for. Sharp writing and a well-matched ensemble are what separate Cavegirl from the crowd. On a class excursion to a cave with stone age paintings the clumsy Rex gets lost. A mysterious crystal opens a gateway in time and sets him back to the stone ages, where he meets a group of prehistoric fellows and the gorgeous Eba. While teaching her English and doing some pseudo-research on her fellows, his main goal is to get her sleeping with him. Daniel Roebuck and Cynthia Thompson lead a cast that brings real weight to the material. It was released in 1985. Cavegirl earns its laughs from character rather than situation, which is why it does not wear thin the way pure farce tends to. There is real craft here, even in the moments that do not fully land.
Comedy fans looking for a reliably funny watch will find it in Cavegirl. It stands on its own even without an obvious comparison point. It is a manageable watch, easy to fit into a single evening. Daniel Roebuck's comic timing carries it through its weaker moments. The kind of comedy you recommend to someone who claims they do not watch much.
