Cloverfield

Cloverfield is currently streaming in the US on Hoopla, and in the UK on Paramount Plus and Sky Go, and it earns its premise rather than just borrowing genre trappings. A tight runtime that never overstays its welcome. A 7/10 rating says what the writing already makes obvious: this one works. Lizzy Caplan leads a cast that never lets the concept overwhelm the characters. There is no real reason to keep putting it off — it is right there on Hoopla.

Cloverfield is not trying to be everything to everyone, and that focus is exactly what makes it work. Cloverfield uses its genre premise as cover for asking bigger questions. Five young New Yorkers throw their friend a going-away party the night that a monster the size of a skyscraper descends upon the city. Told from the point of view of their video camera, the film is a document of their attempt to survive the most surreal, horrifying event of their lives. Lizzy Caplan and Jessica Lucas lead a cast that keeps the bigger ideas grounded in something human. It was released in 2008. The world-building is meticulous enough to sustain multiple rewatches, with details early on that only make sense later. It knows exactly what it is, and does not try to be anything else.

For late-night viewing or a proper weekend binge, Cloverfield fits the bill. It has built its own audience without needing a direct comparison. A contained runtime means every scene is doing real work. Lizzy Caplan grounds the bigger ideas in something human. Once you are in, you will want to talk about it.
