Demented is currently streaming in the US on fuboTV and Philo, and its case-by-case structure never gets in the way of the bigger story. The length is exactly right for the story it is telling — nothing rushed, nothing dragged out. 30 viewers have already rated it on TMDB — the kind of consensus that does not happen by accident. Sallee Young anchors it, but the writing does the real work. There is no real reason to keep putting it off — it is right there on fuboTV.
Demented arrived without much fanfare and built its audience the hard way — through word of mouth. The plotting gives Demented its backbone, but it is the characters you come back for. A woman is gang-raped in a horse's stable, and even though the rapists are caught and imprisoned, she is harassed many moons later by ghastly visions of her tormentors, while her husband philanders and every little thing frightens her out of her wits. Sallee Young and Harry Reems lead a cast that brings real weight to the material. It was released in 1980. What distinguishes the best crime dramas from the rest is whether the character work can carry scenes where the mystery takes a breath — Demented passes that test consistently. It knows exactly what it is, and does not try to be anything else.
If you cannot walk away from a good mystery, Demented will keep you hooked. It does not lean on comparisons to make its case. Short enough to finish in one sitting, substantial enough to feel satisfying. Sallee Young anchors it, but the writing does the real work. If you are going to commit to one crime drama this month, make it this one.
