If you want science fiction that respects its own premise, Doomsday is available on streaming right now. The length is exactly right for the story it is telling — nothing rushed, nothing dragged out. Doomsday arrived without much fanfare and built its audience the hard way — through word of mouth. Doomsday uses its genre premise as cover for asking bigger questions. The lethal Reaper virus spreads throughout Britain—infecting millions and killing hundreds of thousands. Authorities brutally and successfully quarantine the country but, three decades later, the virus resurfaces in a major city. An elite group of specialists is urgently dispatched into the still-quarantined country to retrieve a cure by any means necessary. Rhona Mitra and Bob Hoskins lead a cast that brings real weight to the material. It was released in 2008. The rules of Doomsday's world are consistent enough that the big swings never feel like cheating. There is real craft here, even in the moments that do not fully land.

For late-night viewing or a proper weekend binge, Doomsday fits the bill. It rewards viewers regardless of what else is in their watch history. Best experienced as a single, sustained watch from start to finish. Rhona Mitra's performance is the anchor the more ambitious moments need. The world-building pays off in ways you will not anticipate on a first watch.
