Fire and Ice

Whatever else is competing for your attention this week, Fire and Ice is worth clearing space for. The world-building is meticulous, but it is the characters who carry Fire and Ice through its more ambitious moments. The villainous Nekron and his mother, Queen Juliana, plot against the human race from their frigid fortress. Creating mass destruction with huge glaciers, mother and son incur the wrath of Larn, a warrior whose entire village was destroyed by ice. When Nekron's underlings kidnap the beautiful Princess Teegra, Larn sets out to rescue her, assisted by the fierce and enigmatic Darkwolf. Randy Norton and Cynthia Leake lead a cast that brings real weight to the material. It was released in 1983. The rules of Fire and Ice's world are consistent enough that the big swings never feel like cheating. It delivers reliably on what it promises, which is more than most of its competition manages.

Sci-fi fans who want ideas alongside the spectacle will find Fire and Ice genuinely rewarding. It has built its own audience without needing a direct comparison. It is a manageable watch, easy to fit into a single evening. Randy Norton anchors it with a performance that makes the more abstract moments feel personal.
