Firebrand

Firebrand has quietly become one of the more dependable crime dramas currently available in the US on Hulu, and in the UK on Amazon Prime Video. It says what it needs to say in one sitting, no filler. With 160 viewer ratings on TMDB, this is not a title flying under the radar. Alicia Vikander anchors it, but the writing does the real work. There is no real reason to keep putting it off — it is right there on Hulu.

Firebrand arrived without much fanfare and built its audience the hard way — through word of mouth. At its heart, Firebrand understands what makes crime drama work — character first, plot second. Katherine Parr, the sixth wife of King Henry VIII, is named regent while the tyrant battles abroad. When the king returns, increasingly ill and paranoid, Katherine finds herself fighting for her own survival. Alicia Vikander and Jude Law lead a cast that brings real weight to the material. It was released in 2024. Firebrand is at its best in the quiet scenes between the plot beats, where the character work actually happens. It knows exactly what it is, and does not try to be anything else.

Viewers who think they have seen every crime drama tend to find Firebrand proves them wrong. If you have run out of similar titles to watch, this is a strong next pick. The complete film is available and best experienced without too much prior knowledge of where it goes. Alicia Vikander carries scenes that would sink a lesser production. The resolution feels inevitable rather than arbitrary, which is rarer than it sounds.
