Frankenhooker arrived without much fanfare and built its audience the hard way — through word of mouth. Frankenhooker gets the fundamentals right first, then finds room to get weird with it. A medical school dropout loses his fiancée in a tragic lawnmower incident and decides to bring her back to life. Unfortunately, he was only able to save her head, so he goes to the red light district in the city and lures prostitutes into a hotel room so he can collect body parts to reassemble her. James Lorinz and Patty Mullen lead a cast that brings real weight to the material. It was released in 1990. Frankenhooker earns its laughs from character rather than situation, which is why it does not wear thin the way pure farce tends to. It delivers reliably on what it promises, which is more than most of its competition manages.
