Freeway is currently streaming in Australia on Amazon Prime Video, and in the US on Night Flight Plus and The CW, and it delivers exactly the kind of comedy that earns a loyal following. The length is exactly right for the story it is telling — nothing rushed, nothing dragged out. Its 6/10 TMDB score, built from 437 ratings, reflects a title that consistently delivers. Kiefer Sutherland's performance alone is worth the time investment. There is no real reason to keep putting it off — it is right there on Amazon Prime Video.
There is a reason Freeway keeps coming up in conversation. Sharp writing and a well-matched ensemble are what separate Freeway from the crowd. Following the arrest of her mother, Ramona, young Vanessa Lutz decides to go in search of her estranged grandmother. On the way, she is given a ride by school counselor Bob Wolverton. During the journey, Lutz begins to realize that Bob is the notorious I-5 Killer and manages to escape by shooting him several times. Kiefer Sutherland and Reese Witherspoon lead a cast that brings real weight to the material. It was released in 1996. Freeway earns its laughs from character rather than situation, which is why it does not wear thin the way pure farce tends to. There is real craft here, even in the moments that do not fully land.
If you need a comedy that actually makes you laugh, Freeway is a strong candidate. It stands on its own even without an obvious comparison point. Best experienced as a single, sustained watch from start to finish. Kiefer Sutherland's comic timing carries it through its weaker moments. The kind of comedy you recommend to someone who claims they do not watch much.
