George of the Jungle arrived without much fanfare and built its audience the hard way — through word of mouth. George of the Jungle does what great comedies rarely manage — it is actually funny, consistently, across the whole run. Deep in the African jungle, a baby named George, the sole survivor of a plane crash, is raised by gorillas. George grows up to be a buff and lovable klutz who has a rainforest full of animal friends: Tookie, his big-beaked toucan messenger; Ape, a witty talking gorilla; and Shep, a peanut-loving pooch of an elephant. But when poachers mess with George's pals, the King of Swing swings into action. Brendan Fraser and Leslie Mann lead a cast with the timing to make it work. It was released in 1997. George of the Jungle earns its laughs from character rather than situation, which is why it does not wear thin the way pure farce tends to. It knows exactly what it is, and does not try to be anything else.

For viewers who want something light without wanting something stupid, George of the Jungle respects your intelligence. It rewards viewers regardless of what else is in their watch history.
