Get Hard

Get Hard has quietly become one of the more dependable comedies currently available in Australia on Netflix, and in the US on Hulu. The runtime earns every minute, with nothing here that feels like padding. Its 6/10 TMDB score, built from 2,924 ratings, reflects a title that consistently delivers. Will Ferrell is the obvious draw, but the whole ensemble earns its laughs. There is no real reason to keep putting it off — it is right there on Netflix.

Part of the current wave of titles people are actually watching, Get Hard earns its spot. Get Hard gets the fundamentals right first, then finds room to get weird with it. When millionaire hedge fund manager James is convicted of fraud and sentenced to a stretch in San Quentin, the judge gives him one month to get his affairs in order. Knowing that he won't survive more than a few minutes in prison on his own, James desperately turns to Darnell-- a black businessman who's never even had a parking ticket -- for help. As Darnell puts James through the wringer, both learn that they were wrong about many things, including each other. Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart lead a cast that brings real weight to the material. It was released in 2015. The timing in Get Hard is precise enough that even the throwaway lines land on a second watch. It knows exactly what it is, and does not try to be anything else.

Get Hard is the kind of thing you put on in the background and end up fully watching. It has built its own audience without needing a direct comparison. The complete film is available and best experienced without too much prior knowledge of where it goes. Will Ferrell anchors an ensemble with real chemistry.
