Eventually, Maximus is forced to become a gladiator and battle to the death against other men for the amusement of paying audiences. Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix lead a cast that keeps the chaos grounded in who's actually at stake. Gladiator came out in 2000. What separates Gladiator from disposable action entertainment is character work that survives the explosions. The consistency throughout is what elevates it — not every moment is the best, but none of them are a reason to stop watching.
