Godmothered

Godmothered has quietly become one of the more dependable comedies currently available in Australia on Disney Plus, and in the US on Disney Plus. It says what it needs to say in one sitting, no filler. A 7/10 rating says what the writing already makes obvious: this one works. Jillian Bell sets the tone, and the rest of the cast matches it scene for scene. Start it on Disney Plus whenever you need something guaranteed to land.

Godmothered is not trying to be everything to everyone, and that focus is exactly what makes it work. The jokes in Godmothered land because the characters underneath them are worth caring about. A young and unskilled fairy godmother that ventures out on her own to prove her worth by tracking down a young girl whose request for help was ignored. What she discovers is that the girl has now become a grown woman in need of something very different than a "prince charming." Jillian Bell and Isla Fisher lead a cast that brings real weight to the material. It was released in 2020. What keeps Godmothered from feeling disposable is a cast that clearly understands the material better than the format usually demands. It knows exactly what it is, and does not try to be anything else.

If you need a comedy that actually makes you laugh, Godmothered is a strong candidate. It stands on its own even without an obvious comparison point. Short enough to finish in one sitting, substantial enough to feel satisfying. Jillian Bell's comic timing carries it through its weaker moments. The kind of comedy you recommend to someone who claims they do not watch much.
