Whatever else is competing for your attention this week, Halo: Nightfall is worth clearing space for. Halo: Nightfall uses its genre premise as cover for asking bigger questions. Set between the events of Halo 4 and Halo 5: Guardians… Halo: Nightfall tells the dramatic story of legendary man hunter and Naval Intelligence Officer Jameson Locke and his team as they are caught in a horrific biological attack while investigating terrorist activity on the distant colony world of Sedra. As they unravel a plot that draws them to an ancient, hellish artifact, they will be forced to fight for their survival, question everything and ultimately choose between their loyalty and their lives. Mike Colter and Alexis Rodney lead a cast that brings real weight to the material. It was released in 2014. The world-building is meticulous enough to sustain multiple rewatches, with details early on that only make sense later. There is real craft here, even in the moments that do not fully land.

Viewers burned by ambitious sci-fi that could not sustain its premise should give Halo: Nightfall a chance. It does not lean on comparisons to make its case. Short enough to finish in one sitting, substantial enough to feel satisfying. Watch for Mike Colter in particular — the performance elevates the material. Satisfying on multiple levels.
