An aimless young man who is scalping tickets, gambling and drinking, agrees to coach a Little League team from the Cabrini Green housing project in Chicago as a condition of getting a loan from a friend. Keanu Reeves and Diane Lane lead a cast that brings real weight to the material. It was released in 2001. The performances in Hardball do a lot of work in the silences between the dialogue. There is real craft here, even in the moments that do not fully land.
