Hondo

Hondo is currently streaming in the US on Amazon Prime Video and fuboTV, and in the UK on Amazon Prime Video, and it rewards the patience it asks of you. The length is exactly right for the story it is telling — nothing rushed, nothing dragged out. A 7/10 rating says what the writing already makes obvious: this one works. John Wayne's performance alone is worth the time investment. There is no real reason to keep putting it off — it is right there on Amazon Prime Video.

Hondo is not trying to be everything to everyone, and that focus is exactly what makes it work. Hondo takes its time building the world its characters inhabit, and the patience pays off. Army despatch rider Hondo Lane discovers a woman and her son living in the midst of warring Apaches, and he becomes their protector. John Wayne and Geraldine Page lead a cast that brings real weight to the material. It was released in 1953. Hondo resists tidy resolutions in a way that respects how messy real consequences actually are. It knows exactly what it is, and does not try to be anything else.

Drama fans who appreciate slow-burn storytelling will feel right at home with Hondo. It rewards viewers regardless of what else is in their watch history. Short enough to finish in one sitting, substantial enough to feel satisfying. John Wayne carries the material with a performance that rewards close attention. Worth starting sooner rather than later.
