Hot Rod is currently streaming in the US on fuboTV and Paramount Plus Premium, and it delivers exactly the kind of comedy that earns a loyal following. A tight runtime that never overstays its welcome. A 6/10 rating says what the writing already makes obvious: this one works. Watch it for Andy Samberg — stay for everyone else around them. Start it on fuboTV whenever you need something guaranteed to land.
Whatever else is competing for your attention this week, Hot Rod is worth clearing space for. Hot Rod gets the fundamentals right first, then finds room to get weird with it. For Rod Kimble, performing stunts is a way of life, even though he is rather accident-prone. Poor Rod cannot even get any respect from his stepfather, Frank, who beats him up in weekly sparring matches. When Frank falls ill, Rod devises his most outrageous stunt yet to raise money for Frank's operation -- and then Rod will kick Frank's butt. The chemistry Andy Samberg and Jorma Taccone bring to it does a lot of the heavy lifting. It hit screens in 2007. The timing in Hot Rod is precise enough that even the throwaway lines land on a second watch. It delivers reliably on what it promises, which is more than most of its competition manages.
Comedy fans looking for a reliably funny watch will find it in Hot Rod. It does not lean on comparisons to make its case. Short enough to finish in one sitting, substantial enough to feel satisfying. Andy Samberg's comic timing carries it through its weaker moments. The kind of comedy you recommend to someone who claims they do not watch much.
