Whatever else is competing for your attention this week, Hot Summer Nights is worth clearing space for. Hot Summer Nights treats its mystery as a means, not an end in itself. In 1991, a sheltered teenager comes of age during a wild summer on Cape Cod, getting rich from selling pot to gangsters, falling in love for the first time, partying, and eventually realizing that he's in way over his head. Timothée Chalamet and Maika Monroe lead a cast that brings real weight to the material. It was released in 2018. What makes Hot Summer Nights hold up is that the resolution matters less than how the characters get there. It knows exactly what it is, and does not try to be anything else.

Viewers who think they have seen every crime drama tend to find Hot Summer Nights proves them wrong. It stands on its own even without an obvious comparison point. Short enough to finish in one sitting, substantial enough to feel satisfying. Timothée Chalamet carries scenes that would sink a lesser production. The resolution feels inevitable rather than arbitrary, which is rarer than it sounds.
