Whatever else is competing for your attention this week, Icefall is worth clearing space for. The plotting gives Icefall its backbone, but it is the characters you come back for. A young Indigenous game warden arrests an infamous poacher only to discover that the poacher knows the location of a plane carrying millions of dollars that has crashed in a frozen lake. When a group of criminals and dirty cops are alerted to the poacher’s whereabouts, the warden and the poacher team up to fight back and escape across the treacherous lake before the ice melts. Credit to Joel Kinnaman and Cara Jade Myers for grounding it — this is a cast that earns the twists. It was released in 2025. What makes Icefall hold up is that the resolution matters less than how the characters get there. It knows exactly what it is, and does not try to be anything else.

For anyone who wants their crime drama to earn its twists, Icefall delivers. It rewards viewers regardless of what else is in their watch history. Short enough to finish in one sitting, substantial enough to feel satisfying. Joel Kinnaman carries scenes that would sink a lesser production. The resolution feels inevitable rather than arbitrary, which is rarer than it sounds.
