Jacob's Ladder is not trying to be everything to everyone, and that focus is exactly what makes it work. At its heart, Jacob's Ladder understands what makes crime drama work — character first, plot second. After returning home from the Vietnam War, veteran Jacob Singer struggles to maintain his sanity. Plagued by hallucinations and flashbacks, Singer rapidly falls apart as the world and people around him morph and twist into disturbing images. His girlfriend, Jezzie, and ex-wife, Sarah, try to help, but to little avail. The writing gets a boost from Tim Robbins and Elizabeth Peña, who sell every scene they're in. It hit screens in 1990. What makes Jacob's Ladder hold up is that the resolution matters less than how the characters get there. There is real craft here, even in the moments that do not fully land.
