Things go from bad to worse when they become stranded in one of the most remote regions on Earth. Toni Collette and Gotaro Tsunashima lead a cast whose chemistry carries the emotional beats. It was released in 2003. What makes Japanese Story work is that the leads feel like people first, a couple second. There is real craft here, even in the moments that do not fully land.
